The rise in foodstuffs stands out: March CPI rose 1.9% over previous month

The statistics showed an increase in the prices of food, non-alcoholic beverages and education. The National Statistics Institute (INE) published the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the month of March 2022. The analysis identified a monthly increase of 1.9%, a cumulative variation of 3.4% and a twelve-month increase of 9.4%. Eleven of the twelve divisions that make up the CPI basket had a positive impact on the monthly variation of the index and one had a negative impact. With this variation, the 12-month CPI stood at 9.4%. In the month’s breakdown, 11 of the 12 divisions that make up the CPI basket contributed positive impacts on the monthly variation. Among the divisions with price increases were:
- Food and non-alcoholic beverages (3.9%) with 0.800 percentage points (pp.)
- Education (6.6%) with 0.419 pp.
One of the products that stood out for its increase was air transportation services ( monthly increase of 20.08%). It was followed by basic education services (up 6.8%). Bread registered a 5.9% increase, which represents a cumulative increase of 11.3% since the beginning of the year.

The agency cut its estimate for the expansion of the Chilean economy this year to 1.9% compared to the 2.2% estimated in January.
